THE SCIENCE OF AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is a science of self-healing by aligning one’s constitution with the natural rhythms of the seasons and time. Ayurveda’s philosophy recognizes that everything in the world is interconnected. It aims at restoring wholeness and healing spiritually so we can reach our higher Self and align with our Soul’s purpose known as our dharma. When we are disconnected from Nature and its laws, dis-ease can happen. As a result we may feel disconnection with our lives and those around us, which can lead to disease and sickness in the body and mind.

Ayurveda is concerned with restoring wholeness & healing physically, mentally and spiritually by addressing the root cause of falling out of balance with our lives. We look at nature for answers and Ayurveda offers a holistic guide for our healing potential. When we are in harmony with nature’s laws we experience well being. To be totally healthy, your physical body must be in balance with Nature, your mind must be in harmony with the group/society you live with, and your soul must be in a satisfying relationship with the Universal Soul. Good spiritual health is a pre-requisite for good mental & physical health. According to Ayurveda, health is not a state defined by lab tests or yearly check ups, but a continuous process that embraces all aspects of life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritually.

TAKE - AWAYS

In this twenty hour intensive, Joan and Jeanne will co – teach together and un-pack this ancient science. We will explore individual constitutions, lifestyle, food, and different practices to help align you with your fullest potential. You will walk away from this workshop with:

  • Awareness of your own constitution and tools to help you find harmony within your body and environment;

  • Knowledge of practices, behaviors and habits that are not good for you to prevent future discomfort;

  • Ability to sequence classes to bring an imbalanced dosha back to balance;

  • Pranayama and Meditation practices to bring your mind back to a restful state when it is out of alignment;

  • Steps to create your own Dinacharya, a daily routine that touches all aspects of what it is like to live healthy and connected way to everything around you.

OBSERVE THE ELEMENTS

Thursday | April 29

PRACTICE • 9 – 11 AM

  • This Asana Practice will be led by Jeanne introducing the five elements and how they relate with the postures.

  • The three gunas and how they affect the mind will also be introduced.

  • These ingredients establish the base of information throughout our course and are readily accessible when we bother to access them.

  • We will close with pranayama and meditation led by Joan.


Intro to ayurveda Lecture • 12 - 2pm

  • This will include an intro into Ayurveda, its history and purpose.

  • Learn about the five elements and what the doshas are along with the six tastes called The Rasas.

  • Understand the value of a dinacharya, (daily rituals for maintaining equanimity,) and further explain the gunas and how they work on our mind.

Grounding Vata & Finding Stillness

Friday | April 30

PRACTICE • 9 - 11am

  • This Asana Practice will be led by Jeanne and include working with our Drishti, getting grounded, and learning how to root in stillness.


Vata dosha LECTURE • 12 - 2pm

  • Jeanne will introduce Vata Dosha and the foods and lifestyle that can aggravate it.

  • Learn how yogic postures, breath work, and meditation can help us to balance it.

  • You will learn to create a daily schedule that can help yourself and your students to balance Vata.

  • Questions at the end and a meditation to close.

Cooling the Fire of Pitta

Saturday | May 1

Practice • 9 - 11am

  • Joan will guide you through this cooling yet strong asana practice including forward bends, working with the abdomen, and cooling breath work. Meditation and long relaxation to end.


LECTURE on Pitta Dosha • 12 - 2pm

  • Similar to yesterday, Joan will introduce the aspects of the Pitta dosha and how to bring it in balance.

  • We will explore what foods and lifestyles aggravate it and how to bring it into balance with asana, pranayama, and meditation, and a healthy lifestyle and diet.

  • Questions and answers at the end along with a quieting meditation.

Uplifting Kapha

SUNDAY | May 2

PRACTICE • 9 - 11am

  • Joan will open this dynamic vinyasa- flow practice leading towards strength and confidence in preparation for handstands.

  • She will end this energizing practice with supported backbends to open the chest/ heart region and Jeanne will guide you into Pranayama and meditation practice to balance Kapha.


Lecture on Kapha Dosha
Closing Ceromony • 12 - 2pm

  • Joan will discuss how to balance Kapha dosha including proper diet, practices, and lifestyles.

  • Jeanne will discuss how we can integrate these Ayurvedic principles into our lives to help us align with our dharma and live life in a more connected way.

  • There will be questions and answers followed by a closing ceremony.

Joan Hyman’s grounded teaching style seamlessly supports her students as they emerge from their practice with the rich and bright energy that yoga has to offer. Joan’s teachings come from an organic and intuitive place, drawing upon the combined studies of Ashtanga yoga, Iyengar yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation.

Originally from Philadelphia, Joan relocated to Santa Monica, California, where she completed the YogaWorks Teacher Training with the renowned Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford in 2002, followed by further study with Annie Carpenter, who is known for her SmartFlow® system of highly intelligent sequencing. Joan received her YogaWorks Certification in 2006 then took her first trip to Mysore, India to study with the beloved Sri K. Pattihbi Jois and his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy. Since then, she has traveled extensively fully embracing the yogic lifestyle and immersing herself in her practices. Joan shares her practice and contributes to popular blogs such as The Daily Love, Elephant Journal, and Wanderlust. She has been featured in Yoga Journal, ORIGIN Magazine, and Women’s Health for her advice and expertise on health and wellness.

Joan spent fifteen years as a distinguished YogaWorks Senior Teacher before bringing her expertise to Wanderlust as the Director of Teacher Trainings in 2016. Now, with over twenty years’ experience leading retreats, trainings, and international workshops, Joan continues to travel the globe leading her own signature trainings. A leader in the Los Angeles yoga community, Joan’s open-hearted approach to teaching yoga keeps both her inner spirit and her students continuously evolving.

Jeanne Heileman specializes in discovering the needs of an individual and gently guiding each student to their own grace and balance. She creates a safe haven for students to dive deep, find their edge, and transform. Jeanne teaches with sensitivity, generosity of spirit, and a good dose of humor.

Founder of Tantra Flow Yoga™ , Jeanne brings together her years of studies and teaching skills into a style of yoga inclusive of asana, Ayurveda, mindfulness, with the added focus of the poses’ energy. She was introduced to yoga as a dancer and actress. Facing ongoing pain from scoliosis, yoga allows her tools for physical realignment and acceptance of difficulties. In her quest for a deep and meaningful connection with all that yoga has to offer, she studied extensively in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, ParaYoga, Vini, and Tantra Yoga; each adding a deeper element of meaning to her practice and teachings. Jeanne – 500-ERYT, ParaYoga Level II certified teacher, YogaWorks senior teacher – tours internationally teaching teacher training, workshops, and retreats.

Initiated into the lineage of Sri Vidya, a form of Tantra from the Himalayan Mountains under the guidance of Swami Rama, she continues to study with Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, the leader of the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania. She is also a devoted meditation student with Sally Kempton and Vedic chanting with Dr. Katy Jane. Jeanne is registered as an E-500 Hour Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance, and is also a certified Continuing Educational Provider. Tantra Flow Yoga is a registered yoga school under Yoga Alliance at the 200 and 300 hour levels.
